Demystifying Dental Technology at Lake Orion Family Dentistry

January 20, 2014

More than ever, technology touches every aspect of our lives. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the healthcare field, and especially in dentistry. When it comes to taking care of your teeth, there is no substitute for tried-and-true brushing and flossing. Even so, technology is enhancing dentists’ ability to prevent, diagnose, and repair damage to teeth and gums. Your Lake Orion MI dentist, Dr. Brad Greenfield, DDS, discusses the use of dental technology at Lake Orion Family Dentistry.

What Are the Advantages of VELscope Oral Cancer Screening?

Dr. Greenfield believes that prevention is the key to maintaining a happy, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. Oral cancer, which affects millions of adults each year, is one of many hidden dangers that patients frequently overlook. Fortunately, VELscope enables us to quickly and effectively scan your mouth tissue for abnormalities that might later turn cancerous. This innovative technology detects problem areas that would otherwise go undetected.

During the screening, Dr. Brad Greenfield or his hygienist will use a small VELscope wand, which emits a special type of light that makes abnormal tissue appear different in color from healthy tissue. The exam takes only a few minutes, and there is no need for dyes or oral rinses. As an added precaution, your dentist will conduct a traditional visual exam for signs of oral cancer. The sooner we identify a potential problem, the sooner we can create a treatment plan. As with all types of cancer, prevention and early intervention can save lives.

What Are Digital X-Rays?

In the last few years, there have been significant advances in x-ray technology. Perhaps the most interesting development is the digital x-ray, which offers an 80% radiation reduction. We can now retrieve clear, detailed images of your teeth and bones in a way that is safer, faster, and more efficient than ever. Instead of cumbersome bite wings, digital x-ray technology uses a smooth, compact sensor to create images of your mouth. These images appear almost instantly on Dr. Greenfield’s computer monitor, where he can discuss the results with you and form a plan of action, if needed.

What Benefits Does a Soft-Tissue Laser Offer?

Soft-tissue laser technology is a highly versatile tool that proves useful in preventive gum care. A laser emits a concentrated beam of light to vaporize patients’ gum tissue. When used in periodontal therapy, the soft-tissue laser treats hard-to-reach bacterial infections between the gums and teeth. Procedures performed using this method do not require stitches to heal. Laser treatment typically results in minimal swelling, bleeding, and discomfort. Soft-tissue lasers also benefit patients who have experienced significant gum disease or recession. When applied to these areas, the laser counters some of the sensitivity that often accompanies these periodontal problems. In some cases, we use laser technology as a means of performing oral biopsies, treating cold sores, and disinfecting inflamed and irritated gums.
