Reduce The Fear Of Visiting A Dentist

June 29, 2017

There are a large number of people who suffer from “white coat syndrome”, where they either fear that visiting a doctor will involve some sort of pain or that the doctor may find an issue that the patient will have to deal with. You don’t have to be afraid of your dentist. Your dentist wants to make sure that you’re well taken care of oral health-wise as well as emotionally. Here are a few tips that can help reduce the fear of visiting a dentist.

Tell Your Dentist How You’re Feeling

Don’t be afraid to share your feelings with your dentist. This can help ease your tension immensely. If you’re feeling especially anxious, speak up! Your dentist has several ways to help alleviate your anxiety but only if your dentist knows that you’re anxious.

Bring A Distraction

It can be hard sometimes to take your mind off of your dentist visit. A good way to avoid over-thinking it is by bringing headphones and listening to a song or sounds to help you relax. Try bringing a book you’ve been meaning to read.

Practice Mindfulness

Deep breathing exercises can help ease your mind and relax your muscles:

  • Scan your body. This may sound funny but it can work. Concentrate on relaxing one muscle at a time. Start at the top with your head and work all the way down to your toes.
  • Count your breaths. Breathe in and breathe out slowly as you count the seconds. Try and make each action the same amount of seconds. Do this a few times while you’re sitting and the waiting room or during down time while you’re in the dentist chair.
