Gingivitis is the type of oral health issue that everyone has heard of, that many people assume isn’t really anything to worry about, but that can actually lead to surprisingly devastating consequences. The result? Our Lake Orion, MI team likes to feel certain we have done all that we can to help our patients feel informed about their gums! Just as much as you need to know how to avoid problems associated with inflammation, you also need to know what to look for, how to identify concerns, and what to do should any arise! Let’s get started.
Prevent It!
We know that patients often think that if they have avoided gingivitis by the time they have reached adulthood, it’s probably never going to happen. The truth is, however, it can still happen! In fact, it can happen to kids, teens, adults, and it can happen at any time. You might even have inflammation right now without realizing it (but more on that later). For now, simply remember the basics that will allow you to avoid the development of gum disease and the subsequent consequences that come with it:
- You need to brush your teeth, as we always suggest. Do this twice a day, ensuring each session lasts about two minutes apiece.
- You also need to keep up with your daily flossing! This part of your dental hygiene (flossing is only required once daily) will provide exceptional plaque removal and protection against gum problems.
Know It!
Now, this is where things often get confusing for patients. They assume that if they don’t see any very clear signs of a gum problem or even feel any, then there must be no issue whatsoever. The truth is, knowing gingivitis well means you are aware it’s hard to detect. The result? You know that you need to come in twice a year for checkups just to be on the safe side. Between those visits, you also know that if you see or experience any changes to your gum tissue, from the obvious color change to red or purple to inflammation and tenderness (or anything less obvious), you should call us immediately.
Treat It!
Should we detect gingivitis, we will suggest periodontal care immediately. Remember that this oral illness progresses without treatment and becomes more destructive and more difficult to treat over time. So, treat it ASAP with our help and you may return to your healthy grin.
