We know that kids need dental treatment, especially during the summer breaks when they may be less likely to brush and floss, and may be more likely to consume surgery treats. But we can help kids enjoy strong and cavity-free smiles! In today’s blog, your Lake Orion, MI, dentist talks about our holistic and preventive approach to children’s dentistry.
Kids Need Checkups and Cleanings
When was the last time your children visited the dentist? Starting at around age two, we recommend a checkup and cleaning every six months. These routine visits help lower dental anxiety and instill good oral health habits. your kids may even be more likely to continue seeing the dentist on their own as adults!
With the exam portion, we will use digital x-rays and intraoral cameras to take a close look at your smile and plan treatment with precision and accuracy. We can diagnose issues in their earliest stages, such as tooth decay, gingivitis, or issues with baby teeth arriving and falling out, and the eruption of your permanent ones. In the same sitting, we will also clean the teeth to remove all plaque and tartar, lowering their risk of cavities, as well as bad breath and teeth stains.
The Benefits of Fluoride Treatments
Our team also provides unique treatments to help lower the risk of tooth decay in little smiles. During each checkup and cleaning visit, our team will provide fluoride in a varnish form, coating the teeth to strengthen the enamel and lower the risk of tooth decay in the months to come. We then re-apply during each checkup visit. Since the mineral fights enamel erosion, we also recommend kids use a fluoride toothpaste, with kids three and younger using a rice sized amount, and kids over the age of three using a pea sized amount.
Dental Sealants
We know that even if children take the time to brush and floss daily, they often have trouble reaching the rear teeth. Which means food and drink particles can become stuck between these molars, causing tooth decay. But with dental sealants, we place an acrylic coating on these molars so food and drink particles can no longer be trapped between them. The application only takes seconds, and this can stay in place for up to ten years, protecting the vulnerable parts of their smiles from cavities. If you have any questions about how we protect little smiles from cavities and other oral health concerns, or if you want to schedule a checkup, then contact our team today.
