We have talked about how we use our fillings to offer a custom and holistic solution to cavities. But what if you have an issue that is too severe for a dental filling? In these situations, we may instead place a holistic, custom crown. In today’s blog, your Lake Orion, MI, dentist talks about our CEREC same-day dental crowns.
When Teeth May Need a Crown
When does a tooth need to receive a dental crown? The restoration is one that covers the visible portion of a tooth. Once in place, this can address an array of serious restorative and cosmetic concerns. For example, we can repair cracked, chipped, or broken teeth. We can add length to teeth worn down by bruxism (teeth grinding). Our team can address tooth decay too severe for a filling, and tackle infection by completing a root canal procedure. The placement process can also help improve overall bite balance and chewing function. For those with missing teeth, we could use one or two to support a bridge or one to restore a single tooth dental implant.
The Same-Day Process
In the past, receiving one meant you needed two to three visits. But our team can use the advanced CEREC system to create and place a custom and lifelike crown in only one visit. To begin, we will numb the tooth with a local anesthetic so we can comfortably remove outer structure to make room for your new restoration. We then take detailed images and measurements of the prepared tooth with digital imaging, using these to design the restoration. We upload the information into an onsite milling machine, which will craft it from a block of ceramic. We shade the material to ensure your finished product looks natural and matches the rest of your smile. Finally, we check the fit, make final adjustments, and place it with a powerful bonding agent, all in one visit.
Protecting Your New Restoration
You can take action to keep your restoration bright and protect it from being lost prematurely. For example, be sure you brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss every evening. Avoid tobacco products and cut back on how much sugar is in your diet. These actions not only keep them bright and in place, but also help safeguard your natural teeth too.
