When you have stained teeth, we don’t want you to hide your smile from the world or feel uncomfortable. Instead, why not talk to our team about a professional solution? With in-office and take-home teeth whitening options, your Lake Orion, MI, dentist talks about how we can make your smile shine with teeth whitening!
The Factors Behind Teeth Stains
What causes discoloration to form on our teeth? These could be due to a number of different factors. For example, extrinsic discoloration, which forms on the surfaces of our teeth, could occur due to drinks with dark pigments, foods high in sugar and starch, and poor brushing and flossing habits. intrinsic discoloration, which forms beneath the enamel, could be due to injuries to the teeth, fluorosis, or exposure to certain medications at a young age. As part of your treatment, our team will diagnose and identify the type of stain you have, and assess the severity, so we can suggest the right treatment option.
In-Office Stain Removal
The in-office treatment can provide results in only one visit, great if you need a brighter smile for a first date, weddings, graduations, or job interview. This targets extrinsic stains, and involves applying a powerful bleaching gel to the teeth and then activating it with a light to break up and remove stains. While this option targets surface discoloration, if you have intrinsic teeth stains, we could discuss masking them with bonding, veneers, or a combination of the two.
At-Home Treatment
We also have an option you can use at home, which can target more severe extrinsic discoloration and even minor intrinsic ones too. With this option, you visit our office so we can take impressions of your bite and create a set of plastic trays that will fit comfortably. We then send this home with you, along with multiple plastic syringes of a powerful bleaching gel. At home, you add the gel to the trays and wear them for a specific amount of time each day, usually an hour. Optimal results, such as teeth up to eight shades brighter, is possible in a week to ten days. You then keep the trays and leftover gel if you need touch-ups down the road.
