Bridges are not the only option for addressing missing teeth! With our full and partial dentures, we can offer support for smiles missing most or all of their teeth. In today’s blog, your Lake Orion, MI, dentist talks about our porcelain prosthetics and how they offer a complete smile.
The Causes and Risks of Advanced Tooth Loss
How do we lose most or all of our natural teeth? For some, this could be due to a serious injury to the face or jaw. But in all likelihood, advanced tooth loss is usually the work of gum disease. When this isn’t managed properly, the disease can reach the periodontitis stage, in which people begin to lose their natural teeth. When this happens, people are severely limited in their meal options and nutritional intake, which can lead to poorer overall health. Advanced tooth loss also means difficult speaking clearly and could cause embarrassment in social situations. But our team can help restore function and beauty to the smile with a set of custom and durable dentures.
Full and Partial Dentures
We have two different options to address your advanced tooth loss. The full replaces every tooth on one or both arches, and contains a complete set of teeth in a base that mimics the appearance of gum tissue. Function or special adhesive will keep the new teeth in place. We also have partials, for people with complicated cases of tooth loss. If there are multiple gaps spread out across the arch, too many for a bridge but not enough to require extraction and a full denture, we could offer a partial. Again, lifelike teeth are set in an acrylic base that looks like gum tissue. The teeth will fit in between the gaps and metal clasps will attach to natural teeth to keep the denture in place.
Removable vs. Implant Support
Removable options are the more common option and are held in place with suction, adhesives, or clasps. They need to be removed for cleaning or soaking periodically, and tend to last about 5 to 10 years, requiring replacement as the jaw ridge changes shape. But we could also support them with dental implants, which are inserted into the jaw and act as new tooth roots. This allows your prosthetics to stay in place for decades to come, possibly a lifetime.
