November 10, 2014

At one point, amalgam crowns and fillings were the standard. Over time, dental technology advanced until practices began offering metal-free restorations. Patients can now enjoy crowns and fillings that blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth. Frequently Asked Questions About Holistic Dentistry

Question: What’s so bad about metal fillings and crowns?

Answer: First, amalgam restorations are unattractive and can stand out. Second, many metal crowns and fillings contain trace amounts of mercury, which can be dangerous for the elderly, children, and pregnant patients. With holistic dental care, we can restore smiles and even replace older metal restorations with a metal-free alternative.

Question: When does a patient need tooth-colored fillings?

Answer: When you develop a cavity, you will need to have the decay removed and the tooth repaired to avoid infection or tooth loss. After taking out the decay and cleaning the tooth, we will add a composite resin. This material is durable and can be shaded to match surrounding teeth. The entire process can be completed in one visit.

Question: What are CEREC crowns?

Answer: Prior to CEREC technology, placing a crown took two to three visits and an interim period wearing a temporary restoration. Now, we can design and fabricate a restoration in a single visit with advanced CEREC technology. Made from a solid block of ceramic, these crowns are long lasting and natural looking.

Question: What are the cosmetic capabilities of porcelain veneers?

Answer: Veneers are metal-free restorations made from porcelain. They are thin shells placed over the front teeth, where they instantly mask a number of common imperfections, including discoloration, damage, gaps, the appearance of minor misalignment, and misshapen or worn down teeth. If you have any questions about the placement of veneers, please contact our office today.
