When you have lost most of your teeth, this could be a source of embarrassment. But that doesn’t mean you can’t smile with confidence once again! In today’s blog, your Lake Orion, MI, dentist talks about how a set of removable or implant-secured dentures can help you smile without hesitation again!
The Risks Posed by Total Tooth Loss
When you suffer from advanced tooth loss, often due to periodontal disease, this could mean limited meal options and issues with clear speech. You could also simply avoid social interactions, which impacts your quality of life in negative ways too. We want to help you enjoy renewed confidence in your smile, and a better quality of life too. Don’t live with advanced tooth loss, talk to our team about a possible solution with our full or partial options.
Designing Your Custom Prosthetic
To begin, we will carefully examine your smile and may recommend care to address underlying oral health issues, such as periodontal disease, to ensure the stability of your new teeth. If you are receiving a partial denture, then you have enough natural teeth in place that a full denture isn’t necessary, so we design a prosthetic that provides new teeth to fit in these gaps, which are set in an acrylic base. If you have lost the vast majority of them, we may extract the last few teeth and take detailed digital images of your smile from multiple angles, which aids in the design and fabrication of your denture. Each one is custom-made for you, so it fits comfortably and reflects your facial structure too.
Securing Your Prosthetic
The dentures will contain an acrylic base that mimics the appearance of gum tissue, and ceramic teeth that can handle daily bite forces and pressures with ease. A full set is held in place with suction or adhesives, a partial has metal clasps that attach to natural teeth and hold your prosthetic firmly in place. These need to be removed for cleaning and soaking, and tend to last about 5 to 10 years on average, requiring replacement as the jaw ridge changes shape. But we could also secure them with dental implants, which are inserted into the jaw and act as new roots. This prevents the jaw ridge from changing shape, so they last for decades to come. We then connect the prosthetic to them, and they never need to be removed for maintenance.
