Our team understands the importance of a bright smile, which is why we offer care designed to remove teeth stains and brighten the teeth by several shades. We can help you choose from two different selections. In today’s blog, your Lake Orion, MI, dentist talks about choosing the right teeth whitening treatment for you.
Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Teeth Stains
There are two different kinds of teeth stains. The most common is extrinsic, forming on the surfaces of your smile due to the foods and drinks we consume, or lack of proper oral hygiene habits. These are the types we remove with our in-office and at-home teeth whitening treatments. But intrinsic forms beneath the enamel, caused by issues like medications and injury, or fluorosis. These are also known as permanent teeth stains. Our at-home option could remove these, but we also may need to mask them with dental bonding and porcelain veneers.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
We will brighten your teeth in-office in only one visit with this selection. Our team will apply a protective covering on the lips and gums, and then apply a powerful bleaching gel to the teeth. The gel will then gently break up and remove the stains, often in as little as one hour. The procedure can provide fast results, which is great if you have a job interview, first date, or big event just days away.
Removing Teeth Stains From Home
Our at-home option can handle more severe staining, and offer smiles up to eight shades brighter! You visit our office just long enough for our team to take detailed images and measurements of the teeth, so we can create a custom set of trays. We send the trays and multiple plastic syringes of bleaching gel home with you. Once you arrive home, you will fill the trays with gel and wear them for a specific amount of time each day. Optimal results could take a week to ten days on average. The trays and any leftover gel are then yours to use for touch-ups as needed in the months to come.
You can also help your new results last by brushing and flossing daily, cutting back on sugar and starch in your diet, and drinking water instead of beverages with dark pigments, including soda, red wine, coffee, and tea.
