Earth Day is next weekend (April 22), and as a holistic dentist in Lake Orion, Dr. Greenfield encourages environmental safety. Holistic dentistry uses conservative processes and biocompatible materials that are healthy for both our patients and the environment. Here’s how our team at Lake Orion Family Dentistry is going green:
- Paperless: Our staff uses a digital filing system to keep track of your records and claims submissions. In addition, instead of sending you a traditional postcard appointment reminder, we use text and email to confirm patient appointments. Our paperless office systems not only help reduce paper waste, but it’s more convenient for you, as well. Digital files can easily be shared between our office, your insurance, and other medical care providers. We can also quickly locate your information when needed.
- Digital X-rays: With digital radiograph technology, our patients are exposed to an 80 to 90 percent reduction in radiation. To protect the planet, digital X-rays don’t use film and don’t release harmful chemicals into the environment. As a bonus, digital images are available immediately so Dr. Greenfield can review your pictures chairside with you. Your digital dental X-rays will be stored in a computer system for quick retrieval.
- Dental Lasers: Dr. Greenfield uses laser technology for treatment, disinfection, and detection. Laser surgical treatments use a light beam to vaporize tissue and promote faster healing. In addition, Dr. Greenfield uses the VELscope system to detect tissue abnormalities with a beam of light. Lasers and lights help eliminate environmental waste because they can be reused, and therefore reduce the amount of dental equipment used and disposed of.
- Metal-Free: Dr. Greenfield’s holistic procedures eliminate the use of amalgam/mercury restorations that can contaminate the planet. Instead, we use biocompatible materials like composite resin and porcelain that are healthily accepted by the body and the environment. We also conserve patient safety during removal of metal fillings. Dr. Greenfield uses a rubber dam to isolate the harmful materials and chunks the metal to minimize exposure to the toxic material.
We encourage you to practice green dental care at home. For example, instead of trashing your toothbrush, we suggest recycling your dental hygiene products and using them to clean around the house.
