Making sure your smile is the best that it can be is something that your Lake Orion, MI, dentist takes pride in. By visiting us for regular dental checkups and cleanings, we can ensure that your oral health is at its tip-top shape. We can also advise you on how to properly care for your teeth at home. Sometimes, though, things happen to your teeth that concern you, like getting them chipped or crack. When these things happen, we can address the issue with a dental crown, a common dental procedure that we are happy to provide our patients.
Aren’t Getting Crowns A Hassle?
In the past, getting one usually took two or three visits. You would have to come in first for an x-ray and cleaning and to let us take an impression of the tooth needing repair. Then we would wait for a dental lab to create the crown, and you would wear a temporary one. Once the lab would send back its result, you would come back in to be fitted for the permanent one. However, we offer a new way of getting them, a way that only takes one day.
The CEREC System
Chairside economic restoration of esthetic ceramics is the long name for CEREC. Basically, it uses computer-aided design manufacturing software (CAD/CAM) to create a crown. It takes precise pictures of your teeth and oral structures and digitally measures the tooth needing treatment. This accurate information generates a digital mold that is sent to an onsite milling machine. Your custom-designed, porcelain crown is created in our office. We then place it permanently on your tooth, affixing it with a bonding agent that will ensure it is attached well.
What Are Some Of The Reasons For Getting One?
Crowns are great for patients who have a tooth that has changed color, want to repair a cracked tooth or chipped one, or have recently undergone a root canal procedure. Porcelain crowns are preferable because of their natural tooth appearance, but they can be made from other materials, such as metal alloys, ceramics, or composite resin. They are designed to last up to 15 years if taken care of properly. This means limiting hard foods in your diet, not opening things with your teeth, and wearing an oral appliance if you grind your teeth at night. You will also want to continue to brush your teeth twice a day and floss thoroughly before going to sleep.
