Don’t Let Tooth Decay Get the Best of Your Smile

May 10, 2011

Tooth decay is among the leading causes of tooth loss for Americans, and it can open the door to developing serious overall health problems.

Just as healthy habits can help protect your body against disease, healthy dental habits can safeguard against tooth decay and help avert other dental problems, as well.

First, it’s important to know how tooth decay happens. After eating, bacteria in your mouth start working to break down leftover particles of food, which then produce acids. These acids combine with debris in your mouth to form a sticky substance called plaque, which tends to deposit on molars and near your gum line. […]

What’s Behind Your Child’s Bad Breath?

May 3, 2011

As an adult, you know how embarrassing and unpleasant bad breath can be. If you have bad breath, you know all the things to try to remedy the problem, and, if nothing else works, you know to come in for a dental appointment to see what’s causing your halitosis.

When your toddler suffers from bad breath, however, it can be more difficult to diagnose and treat the problem.

A recent study shows that 23 percent of young children have halitosis. In kids, as in adults, tongue coating, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), and tooth decay are the most common culprits. Seven Simple Steps to a Better Smile

April 19, 2011

Believe it or not, having quality oral health is not hard to achieve, yet the benefits are endless. Your mouth is often referred to as the window to your body, so the healthier your mouth is, the healthier your body is. Follow these seven simple steps to keep your mouth healthy.

1. Brush regularly. Brushing thoroughly and regularly has a huge impact on your oral health. Brushing removes food particles that bacteria feed on, cleanses your teeth, and freshens you breath. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste to strengthen and protect your teeth.

2. Floss daily. Flossing is one of the best things you can do for your teeth and gums, but most people floss irregularly or not at all. Flossing removes bacteria from between your teeth that your toothbrush cannot reach. I recommend flossing once a day, but be sure to floss before bed if you can only do it once daily.

3. Visit your dentist. I can’t stress enough how important going to the dentist is. Come to Lake Orion Family Dentistry at least twice a year for thorough dental cleaning and exams. I can spot early signs of gum disease and help prevent you from getting other kinds of serious health conditions. […]
