Seven Simple Steps to a Better Smile

April 19, 2011

Believe it or not, having quality oral health is not hard to achieve, yet the benefits are endless. Your mouth is often referred to as the window to your body, so the healthier your mouth is, the healthier your body is. Follow these seven simple steps to keep your mouth healthy.

1. Brush regularly. Brushing thoroughly and regularly has a huge impact on your oral health. Brushing removes food particles that bacteria feed on, cleanses your teeth, and freshens you breath. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste to strengthen and protect your teeth.

2. Floss daily. Flossing is one of the best things you can do for your teeth and gums, but most people floss irregularly or not at all. Flossing removes bacteria from between your teeth that your toothbrush cannot reach. I recommend flossing once a day, but be sure to floss before bed if you can only do it once daily.

3. Visit your dentist. I can’t stress enough how important going to the dentist is. Come to Lake Orion Family Dentistry at least twice a year for thorough dental cleaning and exams. I can spot early signs of gum disease and help prevent you from getting other kinds of serious health conditions. […]

As a family dentist, I have a special place in my heart, and my Lake Orion, Michigan dental office, for kids. While dental hygiene is the same across the board for people of every age, children get a few dental procedures all to themselves.

My goal is to instill healthy oral hygiene habits in kids, while giving them the tools to protect themselves later in life. I do this by using dental sealants on my young patients.

Proper teeth brushing is not a habit that children learn overnight. It’s a process that takes time to develop and perfect. Because of this, children may develop decay on hard-to-reach molars. Dental sealants offer a means of protection for molars and premolar chewing surfaces from decay. […]

Don’t Live with TMJ Pain Any Longer

March 11, 2011

You may not have realized it before, but you have little triangular-shaped joints located in front of your ears. Lined with cartilage, these joints move with a smooth, gliding motion. Although they are small, these joints have a big job to do. They join your lower jaw and temporal bone, allowing your mouth to open and close easily.

Although these joints are incredibly strong, they can be thrown out of alignment very easily. The temporomandibular joint is highly sensitive to overall physical, emotional, and psychological stress, and the slightest change can temporarily knock you’re the whole system out of balance. The resulting condition is TMJ disorder, which can create a variety of symptoms, from jaw clicking and minor discomfort to sharp pain in your head, ears, neck, and shoulders. […]
